jaime escalante died

Jaime Escalante dies, inspired 1988 film 'Stand and Deliver'

aime Escalante, the former East Los Angeles high school teacher who taught the nation that inner-city students could master subjects as demanding as calculus, died Tuesday. He was 79. The subject of the 1988 box-office hit "Stand and Deliver," Mr. Escalante died at his son's home in Roseville, Calif., said actor Edward James Olmos, who portrayed the teacher in the film. Mr. Escalante had bladder cancer.
"Jaime didn't just teach math. Like all great teachers, he changed lives," Olmos said earlier this month when he organized an appeal for funds to help pay Mr. Escalante's mounting medical bills.
Mr. Escalante gained national prominence when 14 of his Garfield High School students passed the strenuous Advanced Placement calculus exam in 1982, only to be accused later of cheating. The story of their eventual triumph -- and of Mr. Escalante's battle to raise standards at a struggling campus of working-class, largely Mexican American students -- became the subject of the movie. It also turned the balding, middle-aged Bolivian immigrant into the most famous teacher in America.
Mr. Escalante was a maverick who did not get along with many of his colleagues, but he mesmerized students with his entertaining style and deep understanding of math. Educators came from around the country to observe him at Garfield, which built one of the largest and most successful Advanced Placement programs in the nation.
The AP program qualifies students for college credit if they pass the exam with a score of 3 or higher. For many years it was a tool of the elite; the calculus exam, for example, was taken by only about 3 percent of American high school math students when Mr. Escalante revived the program at Garfield in the late 1970s.

varudu movie review

Varudu is an Allu Arjun’s movie and is directed by Guna Sekhar. Varudu is supposed to be releasing today but reports say that there may be a delay in the release.
Varudu is a much awaited movie since it is the first time that famous south Indian actor Arya will be acting in a negative role.

The star of the telugu film, Arya, was interviewed by Rediff.com and asked about the reason he chose a negative role. He said: “If I would have made a hero’s entry in Telugu it would have been a different project and a small one at that. This kind of large project like Varudu would not have been there. Varudu just happened. I had seen Gunasekhar’s Okkadu and liked the film and Prakash Raj’s role in it.”
Varudu movie is a story that revolves around the first five days of being married.

hutaree militia

ChattahBox)—-An Adrian, Michigan-based Christian militia group, named Hutaree, was among the militia groups targeted by the F.B.I. in several weekend raids that also led to arrests in Ohio and Indiana. Multiple news outlets are reporting that at least seven people were arrested, possibly for manufacturing pipe-bombs or plotting against Muslims. The federal charges won’t be unsealed until the militia members appear in court on Monday. But all of the attention has been focused on the strange “Colonial Christian Republic” group Hutaree, which is preparing for the Apocalypse as heavily armed soldiers battling the anti-Christ. “Jesus wanted us to be ready to defend ourselves using the sword and stay alive using equipment,” reads the group’s

CNN reported the F.B.I. confirmed that the raids have nothing to do with recent threats against Congressional lawmakers or terrorist plots. Other than that acknowledgment, F.B.I. officials are saying very little about the weekend raids on militia enclaves. Detroit FBI Special Agent Sandra Berchtold told the Detroit Free Press, “We can confirm that there were law  activities in the Lenawee/Washtenaw County area, but “the federal warrants are sealed and we can not comment at this time.”

tmobile customer service

When it comes to 3G wireless networks, T-Mobile offers its customers one of the best services in the U.S., but things are about to get even better for them as the carrier prepares to upgrade to HSPA+. This is the year when T-Mobile begins work on improving its wireless data network – something that is needed with newer smartphones coming to the market.

T-Mobile expects to have HSPA+ across the whole of its 3G network by the end of 2010 – covering more than 185 million customers. There is no denying that T-Mobile treats its customers well, this is certainly evident by trying to give them a much better mobile wireless data service.

passover

Passover begins at sundown

Passover, the Jewish festival commemorating the release of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, begins at sunset tonight. The eight-day holiday is celebrated on the first two nights with a meal called the seder.
Focal points of the seder include eating bitter herbs to commemorate the bitterness of slavery, drinking four cups of wine or grape juice to celebrate freedom and recitation of the Haggadah, a liturgy that describes the story of the Exodus from Egypt.
During the eight days of passover, Jews refrain from eating leavened bread, replacing it with matzoh to commemorate the unleavened bread the Israelites ate in their hurried flight from Egypt.
