Jaime Escalante dies, inspired 1988 film 'Stand and Deliver'

aime Escalante, the former East Los Angeles high school teacher who taught the nation that inner-city students could master subjects as demanding as calculus, died Tuesday. He was 79. The subject of the 1988 box-office hit "Stand and Deliver," Mr. Escalante died at his son's home in Roseville, Calif., said actor Edward James Olmos, who portrayed the teacher in the film. Mr. Escalante had bladder cancer.
"Jaime didn't just teach math. Like all great teachers, he changed lives," Olmos said earlier this month when he organized an appeal for funds to help pay Mr. Escalante's mounting medical bills.
Mr. Escalante gained national prominence when 14 of his Garfield High School students passed the strenuous Advanced Placement calculus exam in 1982, only to be accused later of cheating. The story of their eventual triumph -- and of Mr. Escalante's battle to raise standards at a struggling campus of working-class, largely Mexican American students -- became the subject of the movie. It also turned the balding, middle-aged Bolivian immigrant into the most famous teacher in America.
Mr. Escalante was a maverick who did not get along with many of his colleagues, but he mesmerized students with his entertaining style and deep understanding of math. Educators came from around the country to observe him at Garfield, which built one of the largest and most successful Advanced Placement programs in the nation.
The AP program qualifies students for college credit if they pass the exam with a score of 3 or higher. For many years it was a tool of the elite; the calculus exam, for example, was taken by only about 3 percent of American high school math students when Mr. Escalante revived the program at Garfield in the late 1970s.

Terrell Holloway has a game-high 11 points for the Musketeers, nailing two 3-pointers.

Youtube is currently down and displaying the message ‘Http/1.1 Service Unavailable’. This message has been noticed by users all over the world. Twitter and Facebook users are messaging about the error, but there seems to be no explanation behind it.

Google has not announced any reason for the outage. At present it is just the front page that is affected, allowing users to still view videos directly. Other error messages include: "Internal Server Error. The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request."

The outage comes just a day after Wikipedia experienced a server outage.

It didn’t take long for pictures of Michelle ‘Bombshell’ McGee to be everywhere on the internet following her expose of her 11-month affair with Jesse James, the husband of Oscar-winning actress Sandra Bullock.  The same will no doubt occur with pictures of the alleged second mistress that has come forward, Melissa Smith.  But there is something about the first picture of Melissa Smith that the public was made privy to that reminds the viewer of Michelle McGee – all those tattoos.
Star magazine published an exclusive Wednesday about a second mistress in Jesse James’ life.  It seems, though, that Melissa Smith began a relationship with Jesse James long before Michelle McGee entered the picture (so to speak).  The affair lasted two years, she told the tabloid.  During that time, Smith engaged in kinky, rough, unprotected sex with James. 
As shocking as the news might be to some (to others, it is an expected replay of the Tiger Woods scandal), it is the picture of Melissa Smith that might be a bit more surprising in that it shows a tattooed blonde.  Michelle ‘Bombshell’ McGee is a tattooed model as well, albeit with dark hair.  Pictures of McGee show her literally covered with tattoos.  Melissa Smith isn’t as covered, having perhaps half as much body area covered as Michelle McGee.
Although it is apparent that Jesse James was attracted (allegedly) to tattooed women as mistresses, it should also be noted that his ex-wife, Janine Lindemueller, also had (has) a plethora of tattoos.  A comparison of pictures seems to indicate that Jesse James liked his women with a lot of tattoos.
Along with the tattoos, all three women were (are) strippers and have been (are) connected with the adult entertainment industry.  The next logical question might be: What made Jesse James seemingly break character, date, and marry tattoo-deprived Sandra Bullock?

This week’s I ♥ Faces photo blog challenge is angles – a subject close to my heart. When I decided to start my own photography business last year, I realized that my biggest challenge would be to come up with new and interesting to help share a family’s story through photographs. Thankfully my photo subjects usually help me in that area by all being so wonderfully different, but I am always looking for ways to stretch myself.
So when I went back through some of my sessions from last year, I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of shots and angles. My favourite angle is to get down at the eye level of the children that I photograph, but I was looking for something a little different. This one jumped out at me because my goal was to capture the name of a favourite location with my subjects in an interesting way. I really hope they can look back on this photo in many years and it will remind them of the time they spent at this restaurant, rather than just the day we spent together taking a few photos.

American Idol said goodbye to Paige Miles and finalized the Top 10. That's the group that goes on tour and from which most every single successful Idol alum has sprung. (Has anyone been in the Top 12 or 24 and made waves that didn't make it to the Top 10?) So going on tour is:

The show began with a shocker: at 8:02 I thought I spotted someone in the audience so excited about Idol that she didn't realize her nose was bleeding. Turns out friends of Siobhan had dressed up as zombies.
The Idol kids sang another horrific lip-sync singalong, this time to the awesome pop classic "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" by Wham. (My favorite version of that tune came in Central Park of New York City. I was walking through it on a summer's day with my father and brother when a homeless man appeared, clutching a boombox to his ear, even though I don't believe it was turned on. He started bopping up and down and suddenly squealed out, "Wake me UP before you go go!" over and over as he walked through the grass. Only in New York, as Cindy Adams would say.)
But why are they still doing lip-syncs? And why do the worst singers always tend to be the best lip-syncers? There's a lesson in there somewhere. Lee Dewyze looked miserable the entire night. He looked miserable during the sing-along, during the chat with Ryan, during the elimination round and at the finale.
And Ryan touched on a nerve by showing footage of Michael Lynche walking out of his apartment with his son. Ryan described him as "babysitting." Uh, you don't "babysit" your own son. Just one more example of society's deep prejudice against men as parents.
Anyway, that was followed by a notably awkward elimination. Ryan stood up Lee and Casey on one side and Paige and Tim on the other. Paige was finally told she was in the bottom three. But as Tim started to sit down he was anti-climatically told that he was in the bottom three as well. But Ryan forgot to tell Lee and Casey they were safe so they stood there awkwardly even as the show cut to a break.
Miley Cyrus performed her dramatic ballad "When I Look At You" after Ryan informed us that next week's genre was r&b/soul and the mentor would be Usher. Miley off-handedly said the audience had given Miley the first standing ovation in her life. Ryan found that hard to believe, as did I, but she seemed pretty sincere.
Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens faced off, with Andrew (barely) safe and Katie in the bottom three. Katie was immediately made safe. Then Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato (Camp Rock!) sang a weak inspirational tune called "Make A Wave." Still, the show has definitely been booking very young-leaning guests and mentors this season. Finally, to no one's surprise, Paige went home, with the judges politely telling her even before she sang that they wouldn't use their save.
